Patient Monitoring

Patient monitoring during anesthesia is a critical aspect of ensuring the safety and well-being of animals undergoing surgical or medical procedures. Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) play a vital role in anesthesia monitoring. We monitor all patients whether it is sedation or general anesthesia.

During the induction phase, RVTs closely monitor the patient’s vital signs, including heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation levels. They adjust anesthetic agents as needed to maintain the appropriate depth of anesthesia.

Ensuring a patent airway is essential. Our RVTs monitor the endotracheal tube placement, ensuring it remains in the correct position throughout the procedure. They also monitor for any signs of airway obstruction or respiratory distress.

Our RVTs continue to monitor the patient throughout the surgical or medical procedure. They assess the patient’s vital signs regularly, making adjustments to the anesthesia as necessary to maintain stable anesthesia depth. This involves administering inhalant anesthetics, analgesics (pain medications), and IV fluids to support the patient’s needs.

We monitor the patient’s temperature and use warming devices to prevent hypothermia.

Detailed and accurate record-keeping is essential during anesthesia. RVTs document vital signs, medications administered, fluid rates, and any noteworthy observations throughout the procedure.

Our RVTs are trained to recognize and respond to any complications or emergencies that may occur during anesthesia. This includes managing cardiac arrhythmias, respiratory distress, or other adverse events promptly and effectively.

After the procedure, our RVTs continue to monitor the patient during the recovery phase. They ensure the patient is awakening from anesthesia safely, maintain pain control, and provide post-operative care as directed by the veterinarian.
