Senior Pet Wellness

Senior dog and cat wellness visits to the veterinarian are crucial for maintaining and monitoring the health of aging pets. As pets grow older, they become more susceptible to age-related diseases and conditions. Regular wellness visits in their senior years help ensure early detection and management of potential health issues, ultimately improving their quality of life.

During senior wellness visits, your veterinarian conducts a thorough physical examination of your dog or cat. This examination includes checking vital signs, assessing body condition, inspecting the skin and coat, examining the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth, and palpating the abdomen and internal organs. The vet also evaluates the musculoskeletal system and mobility.

Depending on your pet’s vaccination history, booster vaccinations may still be necessary in their senior years. However, vaccination recommendations may change based on their age and health status.

Even senior pets need protection from internal and external parasites. We may recommend fecal examinations and prescribe preventive medications or treatments as needed.

Dental health remains essential for senior pets. We assess your pet’s oral health during wellness visits and may recommend dental cleanings or home care measures to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Senior pets often have different nutritional needs than younger animals. Your veterinarian can offer guidance on selecting an appropriate diet tailored to their age and health condition. Weight management strategies may be discussed to prevent obesity and related health issues.

Senior pets may experience behavioral changes related to aging or underlying health conditions. Wellness visits provide an opportunity to discuss any behavioral concerns and receive guidance or recommendations for managing these changes.

Aging pets are more prone to developing chronic conditions, such as arthritis, diabetes, kidney disease, and cancer. Routine wellness exams help monitor your senior pet’s health and may lead to early detection of these conditions, allowing for timely intervention and management.

Comprehensive bloodwork and diagnostic tests are often recommended for senior pets. These tests may include:

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC): Assesses red and white blood cell counts and can detect anemia and signs of infection.
  • Chemistry Panel: Measures organ function, including kidney and liver health, as well as blood glucose levels.
  • Thyroid Function Tests: Screen for thyroid gland issues, such as hyperthyroidism in cats.
  • Urinalysis: Evaluates kidney function and screens for urinary tract issues.
  • Radiographs (X-rays): Used to assess musculoskeletal health and identify abnormalities in organs.
  • Ultrasound: Provides a more detailed view of internal organs and tissues.
  • Blood Pressure Measurement: Screens for hypertension (high blood pressure) in senior pets.

Special attention is given to senior pets during wellness visits. These pets may require more frequent check-ups to address age-related concerns and adjust their healthcare plan accordingly.
